Tableau Knowledge, Tableau Questions (Makeover Monday - 5.11.20)
Looking Back
Prior to creating the redesigned visualization/dashboard for the Makeover Monday World Happiness Project, I had made one other visualization in Tableau. I recently completed the Tableau Desktop I: Fundamentals course on the Tableau e-learning platform. I was able to apply many things that I had learned about in the course. There were a few things that I had to investigated on my own in order to realize my vision. Two aspects of Tableau that were new to me were (a) how to make a donut chart and (b)Tableau’s Order of Operations. The order of operations came into play when filtering the country and then presenting rank information (which was then always 1). I’m not sure if there are ways to maintain the correct rank information inside Tableau, but I ended up creating a rank variable and number of observations variable in Excel and used the augmented data set for the rank information.
Also, I added small (i) icons (circle graphs with tool tips). Not sure if this type of icon is now passé, but I felt like it was a good way to keep that information easily available to the user.
Here are links to online resources about a variety of topics.
Formatting
- Selecting containers - a time-saving tip
- Formatting Text Boxes - Right clicking in a text box gives you a single formatting option for alignment. You need to close that panel and go to the layout panel for the full set of formatting options.
- Removing Grid Lines
- Removing X-Axis Label
Techniques
- Putting viz inside a tool tip
- Best video walkthrough of making donut chart (with ‘min 1’ trick)
Understanding Tableau
Troubleshooting
- Editing unrecognized map locations - e.g. 'Hong Kong' was coded as ‘Hong Kong S.A.R. of China’ in the dataset.
Looking Ahead
- I’d like to include ‘st’, ‘nd’, ‘rd’, and ‘th’ appropriately for the rank information.
- Is there a way to maintain the correct rank information inside Tableau when filtering?
